Abstract

FORMULATION OF HERBAL GEL AND PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF ANTI-MICROBIAL ACTIVITY (IN VITRO STUDY) OF Gardenia jasminoides Ellis FLOWER EXTRACT

Abstract

Gardenia jasminoides Ellis is a medicinal shrub belongs to the family Rubiaceae. The medicinal properties of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis known to the traditional medicine. The leaves, roots and stem are used to make medicinal extract, various supplements and essential oil. However, the antimicrobial effect Gardenia jasminoides Ellis flower is not yet explained. Therefore, the present investigation was mainly focused on the antimicrobial activity of the flowers of Gardenia jasminoides. The extract was collected from flower extract also used to formulation of herbal gel. The flower extracts and preparing herbal gel were tested against standard bacterial and fungal strains by agar-well diffusion method. The zone of inhibition was observed with Staphylococcus aureus, proteus vulgaris and aspergillus flavus with some exceptions. Limited inhibitory concentrations of the extracts were initiate to be significant. The results of the study indicated the flower extract and preparing herbal gel was effective to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris and Aspergillus flavus. For validating the microscopic study, phytochemical analysis of flower also carried out. Microscopic character of the flower was studied by optical microscope. Phytochemical analysis revealed the flower extract have saponin, tannin, flavonoid, alkaloid, glycosides, phenols. The obtained results give a support for the explanation of this plant in traditional medicine and its more investigation.
