CHLOROPHYLL MUTATION STUDIES IN CHICKPEA (CICER ARIETINUM L.)
S. E. Mahamune*
Abstract
The chickpea seeds of variety Vijaya were mutagenized with 0.05%,
0.10% and 0.15% concentrations of EMS and M1 population was
raised. After studying the various biological parameters from M1
generation, the M1 generation was harvested. The seeds of M1
generation were sown and M2 generation was raised. The entire M2
generation was thoroughly screened for chlorophyll mutants. The
frequency and spectrum of chlorophyll mutants was calculated. The
increasing trend of chlorophyll mutation frequency with increasing
concentration of EMS was recorded. Highest frequency at 0.15%
concentration was recorded. Broad spectrum of chlorophyll mutants
was recorded. Various chlorophyll mutants recorded were xantha, chlorina and viridis.
Keywords: Chickpea, mutational breeding, EMS.
