Abstract
Ayurveda is a science that deals with both the preventive and curative
aspects of human health. The term Strotas derives from the root word
“susravano” which means Secretion, exudation, filtering and
impregnating agents. Srotas performs functions that contribute to the
nutrition of the whole body. Any disturbance at the level of Srotas,
whether structural or functional, causes the disease. Srotodushti and
Kha Vaigunya (Sroto Vaigunya) are those units in the pathogenesis of
diseases in Ayurveda that are of great importance in the above two
aspects, i.e removal of Srotodushti as a cure and correction of Kha Vaigunya as a preventive
measure. In Vyadhyutpatti was recognized as the process of disease manifestation consisting
of successive stages of pathogenesis leading to disease. Khavaigunya knowledge explains
how perverse doshas become stagnant in a certain part of the body and cause disease while
ignoring many other parts of the body. Due to srotodushti kha-vaigunya is the manifestation
of disease. Four types of Srotodusti lakshana are observed namely: Atipravrutti, Sanga,
Siragranthi and Vimargagamana. This article has attempted to explain these two concepts in
detail to make them clinically useful in achieving the goals of Ayurveda.
Keywords: Dushti, Kha-Vaigunya, Strotas.
