Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus is a serious condition caused by insufficient insulin
secretion and is the cause of serious health problems worldwide. In the
early 19th century, diabetes was thought to be a pancreatic- related
insufficiency of the digestive system and was hypothesized to be
related to regulation of carbohydrate metabolism. Many diabetic
patients rely on subcutaneous insulin injections. The burden of insulin
injections for many patients that encouraged research for new delivery
methods, and a variety of non-invasive and invasive delivery of insulin
are now available. This review describes a variety of new drug delivery
systems including buccal, oral, rectal, vaginal, intraperitoneal,
transdermal, inhalation, colonic insulin delivery, various types of
insulin pumps, and pens. Many techniques have been investigated to make non-invasive
insulin administration feasible. This review article focuses on past, present and future aspects
of insulin delivery methods, their advantages and limitations, and potential opportunities for
new insulin drug development.
Keywords: Diabetes, New delivery methods, inhaled insulin delivery, oral insulin delivery, insulin pens and pumps.
