Abstract
Computers are now an integral part of our day. With all its benefits
come certain health related issues, awareness of which is minimal.
Computer vision syndrome is a leading occupational hazard that is not
only causing a lot of symptoms pertaining to eye, but also hampering
the work efficacy of computer users. In spite of great technological
advances in the field of ophthalmic medicine and surgery, conservative
therapy still continues to be mainstay for reversible ailments. Now-adays,
people increasingly prefer Ayurvedic eye drops because it is safe
and relatively free from adverse reactions. Shigru (Moringa oleifera
Lam.) is an important drug of Ayurvedic pharmacopeia, commonly
used in eye diseases. Triphala (tri = three and phala = fruits), is an
ayurvedic preparation composed of three equal proportions of herbal
fruits viz. Terminalia chebula, Phyllanthus emblica, and Terminalia belerica. Triphala is a
tridoshic rasayana which has extensive usage in all eye diseases. It is pivotal to translate some
potential leads for management of Computer vision syndrome, as detailed in Ayurvedic texts
into user friendly, safe, effective and quality assured dosage forms to improve patient‟s
compliance, like Eye drops. Arka kalpana i.e distillation is one of the established dosage
forms of Ayurvedic pharmaceutics, which preserves the active principles, imparts good
palatability and attractive color to the distillate obtained. The aim was to do a pharmaceutical
study of Shigru arka as well as Triphala arka.
Keywords: Terminalia chebula, Phyllanthus emblica, and Terminalia belerica.
