“THE GREEN BLOOD†WHEATGRASS JUICE, A HEALTH TONIC HAVING ANTIBACTERIAL POTENTIAL
Jagdeep Singh Pannu, Rajeev Kumar Kapoor*
Abstract OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to explore the benefits ofwheatgrass juice with respect to its antibacterial potential andphytochemical constituents present in its aqueous extract.METHODS: Antibacterial activity was measured through agar welldiffusion method and phytochemical analysis with referred chemicaltests. RESULTS: For antibacterial activity Escherichia coli andStaphylococcus aureus showed sensitivity to wheatgrass juice. Thephytochemical screening of the aqueous extract of wheatgrass showedthe presence of various secondary metabolites but the absence ofsterols and triterpenoids in general. CONCLUSIONS: Results showthat wheatgrass aqueous extract contains compounds reported to havebeneficial effects on human body. It can be a potential source of natural antioxidants andantimicrobial. There is a lot of clinical evidence to suggest that wheat grass juice is beneficialin protecting us from diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Once theinvestigators know how much and which compounds are present, we can then find outpossible reasons why they are protective. Keywords: Wheatgrass, Anti-diabetic, Anti-cancer, Phytochemical, Secondary metabolites, Antibacterial. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
