PAST AND PRESENT SITUATION OF LEPROSY IN INDIA AND ITS FUTURE APPROACHES: A REVIEW

Abstract
Leprosy is a habitual contagious disease caused by a bacillus
Mycobacterium leprae. It is an acid- fast rod shaped bacillus. A
treatable habitual contagious disease that substantially causes skin
lesions and nerve damage. It is transmitted through droplets from the
mouth, nose and also through the frequent contact with undressed
cases. Also transmitted, in contact with Armadillos of the species
Dasypus novemcintus (armadillo with nine signs). The medium
consists of dragged close contact between susceptible and genetically
fitted individuals. The way of entry and exit of M.Leprae is the nasal
mucosa. Frequency of the disease is reduced by the introduction of
multi drug remedy. Leprosy is treatable with multi-drug remedy in the
early stages and prevents disability. Treatment with the use of Rifampicin, Dapsone and
ANO-Clofazimine for 6-12 months depends on the type of Leprosy.
