Abstract
Achievement of motherhood is the cherished desire of every woman. A mother’s joy begins when new life is stirring inside. To be pregnant is to be vitally alive, thoroughly woman and distressingly inhabited. Soul and spirit are stretched along with body making pregnancy a time of transition, growth and profound beginnings. Pregnancy is very delicate stage in which many physiological, anatomical, hormonal and biochemical changes not only confined to the genital organs but also to all systems of the body due to growing fetus like amenorrhea, morning sickness, breast discomfort, fatigue. Nausea and vomiting is one of them which occurs in early weeks of pregnancy. About 70-80% of pregnant women are suffering from this health issue. Vomiting in pregnancy should be treated by providing desirable products to her. If it is not corrected timely, it causes hyperemesis gravidarum which even hampers the fetal outcome. Ayurveda is a science of life which emphasizes both preventive and curative aspect of the diseases. Chardi can be a separate disease, symptom or complication of other diseases. But direct reference regarding Garbhini Chardi is not available in Ayurvedic classics. Garbhini Chardi is one among the Garbhini Vyapadas explained by our Acharyas which is a pregnancy induced ill health and causes congenital problems in newborn due to nutritional deficiency. Ayurvedic classics have mentioned Garbhini Chardi as Vyakta Garbha Lakshana (आर्तव अदर्शनं आस्यसंस॒वणम् अनन्नाभिलाषः च्छर्दिः अरोचको अम्लकामता)[1] which can be correlated with vomiting in pregnancy (Emesis gravidarum). Acharya Charka has compared pregnant women with Taila Poorna Patra which can spill off even by small disturbances needs proper attention.[1]
