Abstract
Cefuroxime axetil is an oral active prodrug formulation of cefuroxime,
which immediately undergoes deesterification upon absorption to
produce free cefuroxime. Cefuroxime axetil provides an in vitro
antibacterial spectrum against a variety of gram-positive and certain
gram-negative pathogens. Its beta-lactamase stability makes it effective
in treating a range of illnesses brought on by beta-lactamase-producing
strains of Haemophilus influenzae, Branhamella catarrhalis, and
Staphylococcus aureus. Good action against Enterobacteriaceae and
moderate activity against anaerobes other than Bacteroidesfragilis are
both characteristics of cefuroxime axetil. Cefuroxime axetil may be
used to treat infections acquired in the community, such as those
caused by β -lactamase-producing respiratory bacteria. In an era of
rapidly increasing bacterial resistance, empirical therapy with efuroxime axetil may ensure
proper use of newer antibacterial medications, hence minimising bacterial resistance to these
antibiotics. As a result, approaches for screening and measuring antimicrobial activity have
received more focus. Although some bioassays, like disk-diffusion, well diffusion, and broth
or agar dilution, are well known and frequently used, others, like flow cytofluorometric and
bioluminescent methods, are not widely used because they need specialised equipment and additional testing for reproducibility and standardisation, even though they can provide quick results of the antimicrobial agent's effects and a better understanding of their impact on the viability and cell damage inflicted to the target organisms. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in researching and developing new antimicrobial agents from various sources to combat microbial resistance. Therefore, a greater attention has been paid to antimicrobial activity screening and evaluating methods.
