Abstract
The body proportions of the newborn child differ markedly from the
form of the adult. Some of its organs and structures are well developed
and even of full adult size (e.g. the internal ear) while others have yet
to develop (e.g. corticospinal tracts to become myelinated, teeth to
erupt, secondary sex characters to appear). The neonatal period extends
from birth through the first month of life. During this time, the
newborn undergoes physiological and anatomical changes as it adapts
to his or her new environment. Importance of Shareera i.e. anatomy is
utmost important for a physician for differentiating abnormal from
normal. As child grows there are numerous changes in their anatomy.
Ayurveda gives vision about neonatal anatomy in various concepts but direct visualization is
missing due to destruction of great libraries like Nalanda etc. by foreign invaders. Whatever
left is in tit –bits? Great pediatric work of ancient time that is Kashyapa Samhita is found
incomplete which leads to blank in anatomical knowledge. So, help of contemporary science
is needed as our seers have also told to take knowledge from whatever source we can get. In
this paper a critical study of neonatal anatomy has been done on the basis of contemporary
science because in our classics there are no direct references of neonatal anatomy. Study of
synchronized neonatal anatomy provides a vision for various Sanskara and Paricharyas
described in Samhitas proving the great and elaborate knowledge neonatal anatomy in
classics, which is also the need of time to be restored for better use of timeless Ayurvedic
knowledge.
