HYPERTENSION IN AYURVEDA: A CONCEPTUAL STUDY

Abstract
In medieval period, most of the Ayurveda learned people followed
Brihattrayi and Laghutrayi, hence there is no more and clear-cut
description about circulatory system and its concern entities. Hence
other than Hridya, Sira, Dhamani in ancient classics there is no direct
reference of Hypertension was found. A suitable term for the disease
condition Hypertension is not directly mentioned in the Ayurvedic
classics, its symptomatology can be found in the chapters of vata
vyadhi, prameha and hridroga. A disease condition vyanabala
vaishamya, which can be correlated with hypertension, seems to be
resulted from the vaishamya/vikriti of vyan vayu. This condition of
vaishamya can be of two types either vriddhi or kshaya. Hypertension comes under vriddhi
type of vaishamya. Present article is a conceptual study on physiology of hypertension
according to ayurveda.
