. Abstract The current study was to formulate and evaluate nail polish with herbal active ingredient for antibacterial activity. It is believed that the natural ingredients are more safer with fewer side effects when compared to synthetic ones. Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) a precious spice, is a member of the Myrtaceae family has been used as food flavouring, essential oil application and in traditional medicines. Clove oil is a potential antibacterial. The antibacterial activity of clove oil was tested against two bacteria species; one gram +ve bacteria (S. aureus) and one gram -ve bacteria (E.coli). The susceptibility of these different bacterial species towards clove oil was compared with antibiotic (Ciprofloxacin) used as standard. Well plate diffusion method by using Muller Hinton agar was performed for the effective antibacterial evaluation. Results showed that the clove oil exhibit antibacterial activity against both gram +ve and gram-ve bacteria. The diameter of zone of inhibition was 26mm against S.aureus and 28mm against E.coli, while the formulation (nail polish with clove as herbal active ingredient) gave inhibition zone of 14mm against S.aureus and 25mm against E.coli. Hence the formulation can be used as an antibacterial product. Physical evaluation of formulation was performed. Although various herbal formulations are available in the market, we propose to make formulation with herbal active ingredient along with harmless artificial ingredients.
