Abstract

Objectives: labor induction belong to the commonest delivery methods in obstetrics, and cervical ripening has a known role in the success of this method .The aim of this study is the comparative survey of the effects of Misoprostol and Oxytocin in cervical ripening for labor induction. Design :This clinical trial was conducted on pregnant women referring to Razi, Imam Khomeini and Arvand Hospitals in Ahvaz in the year 2012. Pregnant women were divided into two groups of 95 recipients of Misoprostol and Oxytocin .Cervix examination and survey of uterine contraction pattern, fetal heartbeat and maternal vital signs were done. Finally , duration of latent, active and the total phase of labor and both maternal and infantile complications were compared in two groups. Results: Duration of latent phase and total phase of labor in the Misoprostol group was significantly shorter (P=0.002 , P=0.007).There was no difference in the Apgar score of infants in the two groups.Although incidence of Meconium in Misoprostol group was more compared to Oxytocin group (P = 0.001) , maternal and infantile complications were significantly lesser in Misoprostol group (P = 0.001).Regardless of voluntary caesarean cases, there was no difference in caesarean rate in two groups. Conclusions: Misoprostol compared to Oxytocin is more effective and safer for labor induction.

Keywords: labor induction, Misoprostol , Oxytocin , caesarean .
