Abstract
Cnidoscolus aconitifolius Mill. (Euphorbiaceae) is a large, fastgrowing
and leafy perennial shrub that is believed to have originated in
the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. The specific epithet, aconitifolius,
means "Aconitum-like leaves". It has succulent stems that exude a
milky sap when cut. Numerous bioactive substances, including
phenolic acids, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, and others are present.
Cnidoscolus aconitifolius is reported to have medicinal properties such
as antioxidant effect, anti-diabetic property, protective effect against
alzheimer, protective effect on neurodegenerative diseases, protective
effect on hepatic damage, antimicrobial activity, hematopoietic
property, effect on erectile dysfunction and antifertility activity. The
material in this article about Cnidoscolus aconitifolius was compiled using a variety of
sources. C. aconitifolius has been proposed as a potential option among the traditional
medicinal herbs in the review article.
