Abstract
Introduction: Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is a chronic disease that
affects oral mucosa as well as the skin. Many therapeutic modalities
have been tried for management of OLP. Amlexanox is a topical
immunomodulator, anti-allergic drug, the strong anti-inflammatory
action of which, make it a very strong treatment option for OLP. Aim
and Objectives: The aim and objectives of the present study were to
evaluate and compare the efficacy of topical application of 5%
Amlexanox, 0.1% Triamcinolone Acetonide and 0.025% Fluocinolone
acetonide oral paste in the treatment of Oral Lichen Planus. Materials
and Methods: In the present study, 55 patients clinically diagnosed
with OLP were randomly divided into three groups for topical
treatment– group I (5% Amlexanox, n=19), group II (0.1%
Triamcinolone acetonide, n=18) and group III (0.025% Fluocinolone
acetonide, n=18). Assessment of the appearance score and VAS score was done at baseline,
1st week,2nd week,4th week,6th week, and 3rd month. The data were analyzed by SPSS 23
software, using the Chi-square test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Post hoc Dunn test. Result:
Patients in all three groups were asymptomatic at the end of the treatment course. VAS score
reduction was more in topical 5% Amlexanox therapy than 0.1% Triamcinolone acetonide
and Fluocinolone acetonide therapy, while reduction in appearance score was earliest in 0.1
% Triamcinolone acetonide therapy. Conclusion: Amlexanox can be used effectively as a
treatment modality for OLP, without any adverse effects compared to corticosteroids.
