AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO A CASE OF FEMALE INFERTILITY

Abstract
Introduction: Infertility is one of the burning issues of today's era
among the reproductive age group. Conception depends on the fertility
potential of both the partners where female is responsible in about 40-
55%. Among all the causes of female infertility ovulatory dysfunction
contributes 30-40%. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most
common cause of ovarian factors leading to infertility. As per
Ayurveda PCOS can be correlated with condition where there is
vitiation of vata and kapha dosha with sanga srotadusti. Aim/
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of Ayurvedic interventions in the
management of female infertility. Methodology: A 23 years old
married female presented with the chief complaint of unable to
conceive since 2 years. She had history of irregular menstrual cycles, so advised for USG
which showed bilateral polycystic ovaries. Ayurvedic medications (Kanchanara guggulu,
Kankayan gutika, Varunadi kasaya, Phalakalyana ghrita) and therapeutic procedures
(virechan) were administered to the patient. Result: After the treatment the patient was able
to conceive. Discussion: Samana ausadhi given are helpful in pacifying the vitiated vata and
kapha dosha and are also having properties like kapha medohara, deepana, ama pachana,
lekhana, vilayana, srota sodhana. Virechan helps in srota sodhana. Conclusion: By
administering these Ayurvedic interventions, the patient conceived. This case reported here
showed the effectiveness of Ayurvedic interventions in the management of female infertility
due to PCOS.
