Abstract

The chirality of drugs has emerged as a major area in API Pharmaceutical Industry. Single enantiomers offer some advantages primarily related to three-dimensional structure and arrangement of atoms in molecule. Enantiomeric purity is achieved either by the switch from an existing racemic drug to the single enantiomer or by the synthetic development of an enantiomerically pure chiral drug. The potential advantages of chiral switch can be related to a higher therapeutic index due to better potency, selectivity and fewer adverse effects, faster onset of action and exposure of the patient to lower drug dosages. Therefore, it is important to promote the chiral separation and analysis of racemic drugs in pharmaceutical industry as well as in clinic in order to eliminate the unwanted isomer and to find an optimal treatment and a right therapeutic control for the patient.
