Abstract
Shodhanartha Abhyantara Snehana (shodhananga snehapana) for
purification, serves as the basis for purificatory treatments. The final
result of the Shodhana Karma (purification process) is determined by
Snehana (oiling). In order to administer Snehapana (the internal
administration of oils) in a controlled and effective manner as well as
to prevent Ayoga (inadequate usage) and Ati-Yoga (excessive use) of
Snehana (oleation therapy), proper guidelines are therefore required.
Consideration of Agni and Koshtha must be done for deciding the dose
and duration of Snehapana. A review of studies conducted so far shows
that oral lipid ingestion (Snehapana) does not raise lipid levels, rather,
it helps bring the elevated levels of lipids back to normal. Even
if lipid levels do increase during oral lipid ingestion (Snehapana), this increase is only
momentary and returns to normal after purification (Samyak Shodhana). Superior and safer
purification effect (shodhana) is accomplished by performing emesis or purgation after
proper snehana (oleation).
