Abstract
Background: Heart failure (HF) is major public health problem and is
becoming an emerging epidemic. In western countries, heart failure is
seen predominant in elderly patients, but in India it affects relatively in
younger patients. The patients with HF become remarkably complex
due to associated cardiac comorbidities like hypertension, atrial
fibrillation, ischemic heart disease and non-cardiac comorbidities such
as CKD and DM. The presence of comorbid conditions worsens the
health condition and complicates treatment outcome leading to an
increase in incidence of hospitalizations and readmissions. The main
objective is to assess the prescription pattern for cardiac failure patients
with comorbidities and to study treatment outcome. Materials and Methods: It is a
prospective observational study conducted for a duration of 6 months from March 2022 –
September 2022. Result and Discussion: Among 120 patients 66.7% were male and 33.3%
were female and most of the patients were belonging to the age group of 50-70 years. Among
HF patients under study the drugs prescribed were Antiplatelets 91.7%; Statins(89.2%); Loop
diuretics(87.5%); Anticoagulant(37.5%); Inotrops(29.2%); Beta blockers(27.5%) and
Aldosterone antagonist(22.5%). Conclusion: Heart failure is globally emerging disease with
high mortality rate. The patients with HF and other comorbid conditions are more vulnerable
to health complications and repeated hospatalizations. Hence, HF patients should be
monitored regularly, due importance should be given to control the associated comorbid
conditions and relevant parameters.
