Abstract
Ksharkarma is among the Para surgical techniques mentioned in
Ayurveda. It is said to be superior among all shastra (surgical) and
anushastra (Para surgical techniques) due to its peculiar qualities like
chedana (excision), bhedana (incision), lekhana (scrapping) and
tridoshaghna (Pacifies 3 dosha). It is said to provide complete relief in
certain diseases which are not cured by herbal medicine or surgical
intervention. Our classical texts had explained the use of Ksharkarma
in many diseases of Shalakya tantra i.e., Eye diseases like Lagan,
Arma, Sirajala, etc., diseases of Nose like Nasarsha, Nasarbuda, Ear
disorders like Karnarsha, Karnarbuda, Dental disorders like
Dantanadi, Dantasharkara, Vaidarbha, etc., Tongue disorders like
Upajivha, Kaphaj oshtharoga, etc., disorders of Head like Darunaka.
Hence, there is need to study Ksharkarma and its application in various disorders of Shalakya
tantra so that it can be used to provide optimum results to the concerned patients.
