SANDHANA KARMA: CONCEPT OF PLASTIC SURGERY IN AYURVEDA - A LITERARY REVIEW

Abstract
Sandhana Karma as described by Acharya Sushruta is a very old
science comparable to recent plastic surgery or reconstructive surgery.
Sushruta is considered the father of plastic surgery. In the Vedic times
(4000 BC), when Lord Shiva attached an elephant head to his son's
body, Ashwini Kumars was able to replant Yagna's severed head.
Acharya Sushruta described sixty methods of wound treatment Called
Shashti upakrama. Sandhana upakarna is one of them. Shushruta was
the first and most famous surgeon of ancient science. There are so
many examples and descriptions of surgery available in ayurvedic
Samhita. Shushruta has described plastic surgery like Nasa sandhan
(Rhinoplasty), Karna sandhana (otoplasty), and oshta sandhana
(lipoplasty). The aim of the research article is to Collect all the
available data about Sandhan Karma and its correlation with the present era's plastic &
reconstructive surgery.
