Abstract

A LITERATURE REVIEW ON ANCIENT AYURVEDIC DOSAGE FORM GUTIKA KALPANA AND ITS ANALYTICAL EVALUATION

Abstract

Ayurveda has given the huge access to knowledge of herbal and mineral drugs including recognition, attainment or acquirement, generating, conservation or maintenance of prepared drug under broad heading known as Rasashastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana. Gutika is an ancient and Ayurvedic dosage form and it is a result of Kalka Kalpana among the five keys of Ayurvedic science. These secondary formulations were developed to enhance the shelf life, palatability, safety, efficacy and Bio-Availability of the drugs. According to Acharya Sharangdhar, Gutika is a synonym of Vati Kalpana which is called as Pills in modern forms. As Gutika plays an important role in Ayurveda pharmacy, it has enumerable advantages in this type of dosage form like- transferrable, requires less time and efforts to prepare, easy to administer, palatable and convenient for dispense, Guti- Vati Kalpana is a pharmaceutical procedure in which the powder of Herbs or Herbo mineral raw drugs triturated together with certain Kashayam or any Medicinal Juice or even Honey and the medicines are prepared in the form of pills or tablets. As per ancient texts, there are two types of Gutika preparation method, Agnisadhya and Anagnisadhya which is made by hands but as time passes, the methods are also changed. In the place of hands, so many modern equipment has arrived in the pharmacies like ball mill, spheronizers etc. In modern, Gutika is called as pills and spheroids which are agglomerates of fine powder and granules of mass medications and additionally excipients. In this study, the development in pharmaceutical procedures and standardization parameters to formulate Gutika/ Vati/ Pills/ Spheroids is done.
