Abstract

RECENT INNOVATIONS IN GASTRO-RETENTIVE DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM AND ITS PROSPECT IN THE FUTURE

Amol Kharat* and Sayali Malode*

.

Abstract

The use of conventional oral drug delivery systems is convoluted by limited gastric residence time for the drugs having a narrow absorption window. Rapid GI transit can prevent the complete release of the drug in the absorption zone and it reduces the efficacy of the provided dose. Since the majority of the drugs are absorbed in the stomach or in the upper part of the small intestine. To conquer these limitations various advanced drug delivery systems have been developed to increase the gastric residence of the drugs in the upper part of GIT and to maximize the oral absorption of drugs. One such novel approach is the gastroretentive drug delivery system. In general, this study could help researchers to explore new approaches for creating safe and effective gastroretentive systems in order to make them more widely used in clinical practices and the treatment of diseases. This review paper highlights several factors, including modern innovative technology, that are helpful in the development of gastroretentive drug delivery systems.

Keywords: Gastro-retentive drug delivery system, Novel technology, Gastroscopy, Quality by design, Migrating myoelectric cycle.
