Abstract

OFLOXACIN/ORNIDAZOLE INDUCED FIXED DRUG ERUPTIONS: A CASE REPORT

Dr. Subna Nazar*

.

Abstract

Every drug has a beneficial effects as well as potential to do harm. When Doctors consider prescribing a drug, they must weigh the possible benefits against the risk. Cutaneous drug eruptions are most common type of adverse drug reactions and are self-limiting, heals within in 7‑10 days leaving behind hyperpigmentation and sometimes severe. FDE(Fixed Drug Eruption) is characterized by onset of round/oval, erythematous well-defined macules on the skin and/or mucosa associated with itching and burning sensation. However very few cases of Fixed Drug Eruptions have been reported. This is a case reprt of a 21year old female patient who developed maculopapular rashes in the perioral region & skin lesions over the left lumbar region and lateral thigh associated with redness, itching and burning sensation after receiving Tab. Ofloxacin 200mg and Ornidazole 500mg for gastroenteritis. The signs and symptoms subsided within 2days after the drug was stopped and supportive treatment like one dose of Inj. Dexona (Dexamethasone) 2cc IM Stat, Triamcinolone ointment and Betamethasone cream for local application were given. Early detection of cutaneous lesions and immediate withdrawal of the offending drug can prevent the progression of such reactions to their severe variants as well as morbidity and mortality.

Keywords: Cutaneous drug eruptions, Fixed drug eruption, Ofloxacin, Ornidazole.
