Abstract

In Modern, sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a common hearing condition characterized by a deficiency in the sensory hair cells of the cochlea or the neural pathways that transmit auditory signals to the brain. This review provides an overview of the causes, diagnosis, and management of SNHL. We explore the underlying mechanisms of SNHL, its classification, and the different diagnostic methods used to identify the disease. Additionally, we discuss management strategies, including current treatments and emerging technologies, aimed at improving the quality of life of people with SNHL. In Ayurveda, Maharshi Sushruta has mentioned 28 types of Karna-Roga in Uttar Tantra and Badhirya is one of them. Badhirya is caused by weakened Vata Dosha or Vatakapha Doshas by disturbing or obstructing Shabdavaha Srotas (auditory pathway) or Shabdavaha Sira (auditory nerve) or due to negligence of Karnanaada etc. and leads to hearing loss or hearing impairment. Deafness is defined as the partial or complete loss of hearing. An error at any level, from sound transmission to interpretation, can lead to hearing loss. Thus, deafness (hearing loss) can be considered according to the legend of Badhirya. In the present study, a review is presented on Badhirya and hearing loss to elucidate the correlation and thereby provide an alternative treatment option for hearing loss.
