Abstract

EVALUATION OF ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY DETERMINATION IN JASMINUM SPECIES BY DPPH METHOD

Sushant Shekhar and Prasad M.P*

Abstract

Nature has been a source of medicinal agents for thousands of years and an impressive number of modern drugs have been derived from natural sources, many of these isolations were based on the uses of the agents in traditional medicine. A conservative estimate of the number of flowering plants occu]rring on the planet is estimated to be 2,50,000. of these, only about 6% have been screened for biological activity and a reported 15% have been evaluated phytochemically. In the present investigation the Jasminum Species were collected from GKVK, FRLHT, Local nurseries in Bangalore and their antioxidant activity was determined using DPPH with two different solvent extractions using methanol and ethanol. The antioxidant activity was compared with a standard compound ascorbic acid. DPPH scavenging activity in both methanolic and ethanolic solvent showed increase in activity with increase in sample concentration. In most of the samples the ethanolic extract showed better antioxidant activity when compared to the methanolic extract. It was found that among the ethanolic solvent extracted sample, Jasminum auriculatum showed better antioxidant activity followed by Jasminum aungustifolium. Jasminum sambac cultivar variety showed the least antioxidant activity as it required 1300μl of the sample to reduce DPPH to 50% from its initial concentration. In methanolic solvent extracted sample, Jasminum grandiflorum showed a better antioxidant activity followed by Jasminum sambac wild variety. Jasminum sambac cultivar variety showed the least antioxidant activity as it required 1100μl of the sample to reduce DPPH to 50% from its initial concentration. This study thus

Keywords: proves that plant belonging to Jasminum posse’s antioxidant properties that could be helpful in some of the drugs.
