Abstract
Ayurveda is a thought process, an approach to understanding life,
health and disease. Ayurveda needs to be presented again as a Shastra
that is in tune with the needs of the times. Tamaka Shwasa is a chronic
disease of Pranavaha Srotas. Ama is the basic etiopathological factor
in the pathogenesis of allergic disorders and Tamaka Shwasa. Ama
dosha plays a great role in the pathogenesis of Tamaka Shwasa.
Assessment of sama and nirama condition is the most important factor
from the diagnosis and treatment point of view. Agni dushti is prime
factor in the pathogenesis of Tamaka shwasa, its hypo function results
in incomplete digestion of food leads to Ama Formation. Agni
deranged due to Kapha result into Mandagni which also leads to
production of Ama. The vitiated Pranavayu causes bronchoconstriction
(Sankocha) & provokes Kapha Dosha (excessive mucus production)
which further leads to Aavarana of Vayu. Sanga, Vimargagamana and Atipravritti is the
types of Srotodushti present in disease Tamaka shwasa due to Ama. In Ayurveda literature,
the signs and symptoms and the descriptions of Tamaka shwasa can be logically correlated
with the symptoms of Asthma. The airway pathology in Asthma in modern parlance corresponds literally with the sanga purvaka vimarga gaman and resultant Atipravrtti of
Shwasa.
