PRESCRIPTION PATTERN ANALYSIS OF ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL, KASARAGOD

. Abstract The present study aims to analyze drug prescription pattern analysis in a tertiary care hospital. An observational study was conducted in an outpatient department (OPD) of a tertiary care hospital in Kasaragod. A total number of 210 prescriptions were taken to analyze the prescription pattern. The data including patient’s demographic details, and classification of anti-hypertensive drugs were included. The study analysis showed. From the study, data shows that males are more prone to hypertension when compared to females. The increased BP patients were observed in the age group ranges of 51-60 years. The patients were prescribed more with monotherapy than with fixed-dose combinations. The most prescribed drug for hypertension is angiotensin receptor blocker and the least commonly prescribed antihypertensives are α- blockers and central sympatholytics. Risk, factors that have been associated with hypertension are obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption high intake of salt and fat. Initial drug therapy for hypertension includes ARB inhibitors, diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and calcium channel blockers.
