ANTIGOITROGENIC ACTIVITY OF COCOS NUCIFERA. LINN COTYLEDON
S. Sudha*, Mohammed Shafeeq K. A. S. and Dr. Karpagam Kumara Sundari S.
. Abstract A goitre is the overall enlargement of thyroid gland, Goitre occurs due to the irregular cell growth of thyroid gland, that forms one or more lumps (nodules) in the thyroid gland A person with goitre can have normal levels of thyroid hormone (euthyroidism), excessive levels (hyperthyroidism) or levels that are too low (hypothyroidism). Iodine deficiency is the major cause of goitre worldwide, The present study pursued the evaluation of Antigoitrogenic activity of the Ethanolic Extract of cocos nucifera linn. cotyledon (EECNC). Cocos nucifera Cotyledons were collected and dried and extracted with ethanol using Soxhlet apparatus. The phytochemical analysis with IR, HPTLC & GCMS confirmed the presence of steroids, flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, tannins, saponins, quinones in the EECNC. Five groups of animals (27 wistar albino rats) were included in the present study to access the Antigoitrogenic activity of EECNC. The invitro antigoitrogenic activity of the EECNC was confirmed by DPPH scavenging activity and Total antioxidant activity. As per acute oral studies (Guideline number-423), two dose levels EECNC (LD50 – 2000mg/kg) were chosen in such a way that the low dose was approximately one-tenth of the maximum dose during acute toxicity studies. In invivo screening there was increase in T3 and T4 levels and a decrease in TSH level. The increased T3 and T4 levels and reduced TSH levels were significant (***P Keywords: Cocos nucifera, EECNC, AntiGoitrogenic, DPPH, LD50, Total antioxidant activity.
