Abstract

Introduction: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a potentially malignant disorder associated with areca nut chewing. It is a progressive and irreversible disease characterized by inflammation, formation of fibrotic bands due to collagen deposition which limited mouth opening. Various medical and surgical treatment modalities have been tried to treat patients with OSMF. Recently many plants and fruit extract has been used for the treatment of OSMF. Aim of our study was to compare the efficacy of Ocimum Sanctum (Tulsi) with Oxitard in the treatment of clinically diagnosed OSMF patients. Materials and Methods: 90 patients of OSMF were randomly divided into 2 groups (Group I and Group II). The group I patients were given Tulsi tablet 500mg twice daily for 3 months. The group II was given Oxitard tablets twice daily for 3 months. Patients were recalled for 3 months in the time intervals by baseline, 15th day, 30th day, next two appointments were at one month interval for next two months. Results: Study showed statistically improvement in burning sensation in Group I. All other parameters like Mouth opening, Tongue protrusion and Cheek flexibility were statistically significant in Group II. Conclusion: The findings present in the study demonstrates that Tulsi and Oxitard were effective in reducing the symptoms of OSMF. Tulsi tablet significantly improves burning sensation and Oxitard improves the parameters like mouth opening, cheek flexibility and tongue protrusion. Tulsi and Oxitard can be utilized as one of the treatment modality for OSMF.
