Abstract

ENHANCING THE SAVEERYATA AVADHI WITH RASAUSHADHIS

.

Abstract

Rasashastra is an integral part of Ayurveda, mainly dealing with shodhita dhatus and lohas. The nucleus of Rasashastra is Parada along with Gandhaka and Abhraka. These three ingredients form an integral part of most of the Rasaushadhis. The importance of Rasaushadhis is that it can be given in lesser dosage, is not unpalatable, quick acting and does not degenerate easily. Our Acharyas had the foresight to fix a timeline for each preparation during which the formulation remains actively potent. This timeline is called as “saveeryataavadhi”. This timeline especially holds good for the kashtaushadhi preparations. Due to increased commercialization and market demand, the manufacturers are adding preservatives especially to formulations such as kwatha, sharkara kalpanas (Syrups), vati (Tablets) and avalehas. Instead of adding chemical preservatives to our Ayurvedic products, it would be advisable to make use of our own Rasaushadhis, which beyond doubt are very good antioxidants and antimicrobials, as natural preservatives. By doing such a combination, not only the shelf life but also the therapeutic property of the formulation can be enhanced.
