REVIEW: NANOPARTICLES AFFECT THE FUNCTIONALITY OF PLATELETS
*Y. K. Lahir
. Abstract Blood platelets encounter administered nanoparticles in blood vascular system of humans and other vertebrates. This is because of their interactive nature and numbers, structural and cellular physiology and proliferative rate of platelets. Platelets participate in hemostasis, plasma coagulation, tumor metastasis, and inflamatory process, interactions with leukocytes, antimicrobial, immune and host defence responses. Activation of platelets has high therapeutic significance. The parameters influencing activation of platelets have effective roles and need a thorough consideration during the treatment of arterial thrombotic disorders. One has to consider conditions like probable fresh inflamation and fast healings/recovery while the subject is under bioactive surgical processes and clinical research. Recent developments on hard tissue healing process indicate significant role of platelets. Hard tissue healings involves a wide range of intra and extracellular orchestrated events under the specific control of signaling proteins. Any factor that disturbs the inactive and active states of platelets deserve worth consideration. Thus, knowledge about structural and functionality of platelets is significant in biomedical and therapeutic clinical fields. Nanotechnology and its pristine and engineered nanoproducts have their functional significant roles in the biomedical, pharmaceutical and surgical fields. Nanoproducts are in use either directly or via release from the pharmaceutics, implants and from the products used in daily life. These are also useful as carriers, imaging agents and for detection of biomolecules. The interactions between platelets and these nanomaterials become the focal point in understanding the mechanism of these interactions. Thus, it is imperative to evaluate the interactions between platelet and nanomaterials. Keywords: Nanomaterials, nanotoxicity, nano safety index, platelets.
