AN APPROACH TO FORMULATE IN SITU ORAL GEL CONTAINING MOXIFLOXACIN HYDROCHLORIDE FOR THE TREATMENT PERIODONTITIS THERAPY
K. M. Manjanna*, G. Shiva Krishna, Divya G. N. and Geetha A.
. Abstract The objective of the present study was to develop and evaluate the insitu gel containing Moxifloxacin hydrochloride (MOXH) for treatment of Periodontitis. In situ gel formulations were prepared by using methylcellulose and gellan gum as gelling agents by adopting thermo sensitive in situ gel (F1-F3) and ion sensitive in situgel (F4-F6) techniques. No significant drug-polymer interactions were observed FT-IR studies. To investigate the rheological and physical properties, drug content and in-vitro drug release of gel. Viscosity of all formulations was found in the range of 420±10.3 to 810±4.5centipoise and all formulations exhibited pseudo plasticbehavior. Gelation time and temperature was found in the range of 62±1.2 sec to 120±1.4sec and of 36ºC±0.5ºC to 39ºC±0.5ºC respectively. All the formulations showed a satisfactory syringeability. Based on the results of in-vitro drug content and drug release study the F6 was best formulation in all physicochemical aspects, it released 84.77%w/v drug at the end of 6h. The results revealed that the release rate of drug was mainly depending on gelling agent while as concentration increased the drug release rate was retarded. The present research work of the experimental evidence suggests that the MOXH loaded ion sensitive in situ gel system by using gellan gum as gelling agent can be useful in treating several common diseases of the oral cavity. Future research should focus onclinical studies to be performed for the in situ gel to make a significant contribution to periodontitis therapy Keywords: Moxifloxacin hydrochloride Gellan Gum, Methylcellulose thermo sensitive in situ gel, Ion sensitive in situ gel, Oral in situ gel.
