Abstract

An amputation of an extremity or fingertip is usually the result of gangrene, a clinical disease characterized by ischemia and necrotic tissue. Signs include the usual sloughing of normal tissue planes and darkened or black tissue. Wet, dry, and gas gangrene are the three primary forms of gangrene.
