REVIEW OF THE PLANT PRIYALA (BUCHANANIA LATIFOLIA ROXB.)

. Abstract Ayurveda is a life science and is base for utilization of various medicinal plants in maintaining general health as well as alleviation of diseases. Priyala is the one which is identified as Buchanania latifolia roxb. synonym Buchanania latifolia Roxb., family Anacardaceae, is found throughout the India in dry deciduous forests. Priyala has been explained in Samhitas and most of the Nighantus in Ayurveda. Aim: the study aims to review the plant Priyala from available classical texts and modern sources to highlight its therapeutical importance. Methods: The study covers to summarize the literature in the available Ayurveda classical texts while identifying the potential areas for further development of this herb for therapeutical uses in the field of Ayurveda. Result: immense references are available in Ayurveda - Bruhatrayee and Nighantu period, most of the Nighantus have highlighted its therapeutical importance. The plant contains a variety of constituents such as triterpenoids, saponins, flavonoids, quercetin, kaempferol, linoleic, myristic, oleic, palmitic, stearic and arachidic acids. The plant is having significant Cardiotonic, Laxative, febrifuge, brain tonic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, Antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, digestive, expectorant, aphrodisiac, stomachic, Antidiarrhoeal, anticancer etc. activities. Conclusion: Priyala is one of the important plants. Both Bruhatrayee and Nighantus have highlighted its importance. The recent studies suggest its pharmacological values. Hence further clinical studies should be carried out for its therapeutical values. And also, the Priyala mentioned in Brihatrayees has to be explored for its clinical importance.
