CARDIO-HEPATIC GAIN & HEPATOPROTECTIVE PROPENSITY OF MORINDA LUCIDA IN WISTAR RATS MODEL OF AUGMENTIN TRIGGERED HEPATIC DAMAGE: A PRELIMINARY STUDY

Abstract

In this research, therapeutic impact of Morinda lucida was investigated in experimental rat model of augmentin - triggered hepato toxicity. Five categories of rats (CAT I to V) consisting of six per category were used in the experiment design; such that CAT I received normal mash feed, CAT II had induced liver damage, CAT III and IV were pretreated with graded doses of the herbal extract, and CAT VI was standard control treated with vitamin E. At the end of exposure and treatment duration (21 days), rodents were sacrificed and established protocols were adopted to investigate Morinda lucida’s effect on oxidative stress, weight, intoxicated liver and the following were observed. CAT III and IV rats’ weight significantly (p < 0.05) increased (187.83±5.74 and 174.83±32.12) than CAT II (171.67±16.33). CAT III and IV rats’ ALT, AST, ALP significantly (p < 0.05) reduced (82.96±3.33, 136.27±11.67, 110.36±4.62), than CAT II (95.34±4.29, 183.62±42.97, 123.36±23.85) respectively. Antioxidant analysis revealed similar trend as observed in these oxidative biomarkers. In conclusion, Morinda lucida is seen to exhibit hepatoprotective potential, which may be connected to antioxidant properties in the extract. But in order to make any inference on possible inter organ gain (regarding heart health status) further research with inclusion of cardiac targeted analysis may be required.
