AYURVEDIC REVIW ARTICLE ON DHATURA

. Abstract According to Ayurvedic literature, upavisha is a class of medications that are less toxic and generally not dangerous, but when taken or administered, they can have a number of hazardous side effects. In Indian medicine, Datura (Datura metel. Linn) is a well-known toxic herb. Ayurvedic writings mention it in Upavisha. Datura is now recognized as a deliriant kind of brain toxin. Every component of the Datura plant has extremely poisonous alkaloids at hazardous concentrations that, if ingested by people or other animals, might potentially be fatal. The most dangerous component is the seeds, which also include the alkaloids atropine, hyoscine, and hyoscyamine. In authentic books of Keraliya vishachikitsa like Kriyakoumudi reference of prathyoushada(antidote) for datura visha is available. This review article includes the overall information about the poisonous plant Datura, i.e. both ayurvedic and modern view of datura, in its Toxicological aspect, Medicolegal aspect, therapeutic uses and treatment of Datura poisoning etc. Keywords: Datura, Ayurved, Toxicity, Upavisha.
