Abstract

Project title: Prescription pattern for H.pylori among gastritis patients in gastroenterology department in a tertiary care hospital. Background: H. pylori is a gram negative helical microaerophilic bacterium which colonizes the antrum and body of the stomach, surviving in its harsh environment through mechanisms of a resistance and colonization factors. H. pylori has found to play a major etiological and pathological role in chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric disease. Early detection and prompt treatment are essential for prevention of serious complication. Eradication of H. pylori is a good therapeutic option. It helps to evaluate the use of invasive and noninvasive test in the diagnosis of H. pylori infection to determine the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of H. pylori isolated by culture. Aim: The aim of the study is to determine the prescribing pattern for H. pylori among gastritis patients in gastroenterology department in a tertiary care hospital. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted over a period of six months in a tertiary care hospital. A total of 100 gastritis patients were included in the study. Case records were retrospectively reviewed for demographic details, laboratory data, management and outcomes. Data analysis was conducted by using SPSS and Microsoft Excel 2019. Result: Out of 100, a total of 18 prescription pattern for gastritis patients with H. pylori positive were analysed and found to be sompraz HP kit (Esomeprazole + amoxicillin + clarithromycin) 16, pantocid HP kit (Pantoprazole + amoxicillin + clarithromycin) 2, sucralfate 18, probiotics 18. The most frequently prescribed pattern for H. pylori were Sompraz HP kit, probiotics and sucralfate. The prescription pattern for remaining 82 gastritis patients with H pylori negative were found as PPI 80, probiotics was found to be 50, lesuride 39, H2RA 2, sucralfate 77. Out of 100 prescriptions PPI were given for 98% patients and H2RA were given for 2%patients. Conclusion: The study provides an insight into the prescription pattern for gastritis patients with and without H.pylori positive.

Keywords: H.pylori- Helicobacter pylori, PPI- Proton pump inhibitor, H2RA – H2 receptor antagonist.
