AN UPDATED REVIEW ON WATER CHESTNUT

Abstract

The water chestnut, scientifically known as an aquatic plant called Trapa natans L.with various health benefits and medicinal properties. It contains carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemical substances. The fruit hulls of water chestnuts have been identified to possess the highest antioxidant activity among its parts. The herb is used to treat a variety of illnesses in several traditional medical systems, including Unani. Water chestnuts have anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, immune modulator agents, neuro protective and anti-ulcer effects. They have been studied for their potential to treat conditions such as spermatorrhea, general debility, lung cancer, and dental caries, among others. The plant's phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and other bioactive compounds contribute to its medicinal properties. Additionally, water chestnut flour has been used to create baked goods that are higher in nutrients and have better flavor and texture. The plant's nutraceutical properties, including its antioxidant activity, make it a valuable addition to functional foods. The plant's distribution spans temperate, tropical, and subtropical regions worldwide, and it is commonly found in ponds, lakes, marshes, and rivers. In conclusion, the water chestnut is a versatile plant with numerous health benefits and medicinal uses. Its rich nutritional profile and bioactive compounds make it a valuable resource in traditional medicine and functional food development.
