Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are a class of medications that cause a profound and prolonged reduction of stomach acid production. The present study was an prospective observational study conducted in in Tertiary care hospital for a period of 6 months and had an objective to evaluate the appropriateness of PPI prescribing to patients using NHS clinical guideline Patient Individual aged 18 years or above in patient service with at least one dispensing for PPIs were identified as PPI users and were included in the study. Of the 171 patients (mean age, 45years; 99 men, 72 women) included in the study. The study revealed that 42.6% of PPI prescription were appropriate whereas 57.3% of PPI prescription was seen to be inappropriately prescribed. This study also revealed that PPIs are highly co-prescribed with antibiotics for unapproved indication. High dose administration was observed more in Pantoprazole (16.95%) compared to other PPI’s In conclusion study showed, PPI utilization was accompanied by unapproved indications. There was a lack of indication for combined medication. Inappropriate co-prescription with Antibiotics was frequent. So, overuse of PPIs and the high rate of inappropriate prescriptions reflect a lack of concern for optimizing PPI use.
