STUDY OF DRUG UTILIZATION PATTERN IN PATIENTS OF THYROID DISORDERS WITH OR WITHOUT COMORBIDITIES VISITING MEDICINE OUTPATIENT DEPARTMENT OF A TERTIARY CARE TEACHING HOSPITAL

. Abstract Background- It has been estimated that about 32% of people suffer from thyroid dysfunction in India. A deeper knowledge of drug utilization allows us to describe efficient treatment according to the patient’s needs. Aim- To study the drug utilization pattern in patients of thyroid disorders with or without comorbidities. Objectives- 1. To obtain the information on utilization pattern of drugs used for thyroid disorders with or without comorbidities. 2. To evaluate the prescriptions using World Health Organization (WHO) prescribing indicators. Materials and Methods- Diagnosed cases of thyroid disorder, consecutive 146 patients were included in the study. Data from prescriptions was analyzed according to WHO prescribing indicators and consistency with National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) 2022 was noted. Results- In the present study, 74% patients were of hypothyroidism and 26% patients were of hyperthyroidism. The most commonly prescribed drug was Thyroxine in hypothyroidism and Carbimazole in hyperthyroidism. Hypertension was the most prevalent comorbidity. Conclusion- Drugs prescribing pattern in the concerned hospital setting is rational. Majority of the drugs were from National list of essential medicine (NLEM).
