INCREASING RISK FACTORS OF OBESITY IN TEACHERS POPULATION

. Abstract Obesity is a disease condition where there is excess accumulation of body fat and can change the body function.[1] Obesity is generally measured clinically by Body Mass Index (BMI) but there are several factors which accompanied with obesity like stress, intake of heavy calorie food, junk and unprocessed instant bakery food, lack of physical activity, unusual and poor sleep pattern, and untimely intake of food, hormonal imbalance and disease condition. Our study emphasized on increased risk of obesity in school teachers in recent years. Study was conducted in 20 schools and data was processed on 200 teachers including both males and females. BMI and waist circumference were evaluated and it was concluded that both males and females were obese, females are more prone to risk of overweight and Grade I obesity compare to males. Results observed that only 31.5% of teachers were healthy and 68.5% were obese. Out of which 38.5% are overweight, 25.5% are suffering from Grade I obesity, 3.5 % are suffering of Grade II obesity and 1% are suffering from Grade III. Waist circumference of females were found to be more than males, indicating the risk factors of clinical condition like hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, asthmatic condition. The study impacts on the essential need of physical activity should be included as a part of curriculum along with the routine official works on daily bases, analyzing and reducing the stress factor, improvement and alteration in lifestyle and intake of balanced and healthy diet can improve the obesity.
