Abstract

SPECIAL APPROACH TO GRIDHRASI: A CASE STUDY

Abstract

Gridhrasi is one among Vata Nanatmaja Vyadhi. This is pain dominant lifestyle disorder where pain originates from Sphik pradesha and radiates to lower limb. Pain will limit the range of motion of lower limb and patient will walk as bird vulture. Vulture bird’s synonym in Sanskrit is gridhra. Hence the disease is called as Gridhrasi. Few pathological conditions where radiating pain can be observed viz., intervertebral disc prolapse, piriformis syndrome, spinal stenosis, and bone spurs. These pathological conditions can be put under 2 classifications of ayurveda i.e., Vata and vatakaphaja. A patient with severe back pain radiating to lower limb with reduced sensation in lower limb visited OPD of our hospital. A sincere effort is made to understand, diagnose and treat the case. Methodology: detail study of Gridhrasi from ayurveda samhitas, research journal and electronic data base. A patient of Gridhrasi was administered with internal and external medication. Changes are observed. Result: With ayurvedic treatment protocol, the Gridhrasi was managed successfully with Raktamoskshana, Basti and Shamana Oushadhi. Discussion: Gridhrasi is involved with both Vata and Kapha characterized by Stambha, Toda, Ruk, and Spandana. These Lakshanas will affect primarily kati pradesha then pain will radiate to lower limb. The treatment modalities including Niruha and Anuvasana Basti, Raktamokshana in Kati Pradesha to remove the Kati-sthanagata vata. shamana oushadhas to pacify Vata systemically. Shamana Oushadhi should be followed for stipulated period of time until complete reduction of symptoms as well as to stop any recurrence.
