FORMULATION OF PASSIFLORA INCARNATA EFFERVESCENT GRANULES USING DESIGN OF EXPERIMENT

Abstract

The natural plant Passiflora incarnata is frequently used in phytomedicine to reduce anxiety. This study set out to create an optimal dosage form for Passiflora incarnata administration through effervescent granules. Effervescent granules are dissolvable, disintegrate quickly, as well as provide a palatable formula that can prevent the unpleasant bitterness of drugs. A trail was designed using DoE (Design of Experiment) using 23 factorial designs. This model was developed to investigate the granules' physical characteristics (disintegration time, angle of repose, and Carr's index). According to experimental design, effervescent mixture (citric acid, tartaric acid & sodium bicarbonate), MCC & Tween 80 is important factor in determining disintegration time, Carr’s index and Angle of repose. This work also includes screening of excipients, physical parameters, phytochemical screening, TLC, FTIR, UV spectroscopy, pH solubility, Total flavonoid content, drug-excipient compatibility studies of extract. The effervescent granules derived from Passiflora incarnata shown excellent physical qualities, fulfilled pharmacopeial quality standards, and proved to be a very promising plant extract vehicle.
