GENERAL INTRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT OF PCOD ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA - A REVIEW

Dr. Neeraj Kumar Sahu* and Dr. Rumeena Khan

Abstract

PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) is a medical condition in which the woman ovaries produce immature or partially mature eggs in large numbers and over the time these become cysts in ovaries. Due to this ovary become large and secrete large amounts of male hormones (androgens) causing infertility, irregular menstrual cycles, hair loss and abnormal weight gain. Ayurveda is considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means “The Science of Life.” Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and is often called the “Mother of All Healing.” It stems from the ancient Vedic culture and was taught for many thousands of years in an oral tradition from accomplished masters to their disciples. Some of this knowledge was set to print a few thousand years ago, but much of it is inaccessible.[1] PCOS/PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is one of the most prevalent endocrine hormonal disorders in women, affecting up to 20% of females in their reproductive period, leading to primary or secondary infertility. PCOS in Ayurveda was associated with Aarthava Kshaya.[2]
