EXPLORATION OF THE ROLE OF DHATWAGNI (DIGESTIVE FIRE) IN HEALTH AND WELLNESS – A CRITICAL REVIEW
Dr. Varun Gupta* and Dr. Dnyanesh Joshi
Abstract Introduction: Ayurveda, an ancient Indian medical system, considers Agni, particularly Dhatwagni, as pivotal for digestion and metabolism. Dhatwagni refers to tissue-specific metabolic fires responsible for transforming nutrients into tissue elements, crucial for bodily functions. Methods: This study integrates classical Ayurvedic texts with modern medical insights to explore Dhatwagni's role. Literature review includes texts by Charak, Sushruta, Vagbhata, and contemporary research articles. Results: Dhatwagni encompasses seven types corresponding to each bodily tissue (Dhatu), metabolizing nutrients through sequential transformations (Dhatwagnipaka). Imbalances in Dhatwagni (Tikshna or Manda) contribute to various diseases like diabetes, obesity, and dyslipidemia. Discussion: Ayurvedic concepts of Dhatwagni align with modern enzymatic processes, emphasizing its role in cellular metabolism and disease pathogenesis. Therapeutic interventions include diet, lifestyle adjustments, and herbal formulations to restore Dhatwagni balance. Conclusion: Understanding Dhatwagni offers an integrative approach to health and disease management, combining traditional wisdom with contemporary biomedical understanding. This holistic perspective underscores Dhatwagni's significance in personalized healthcare and preventive medicine.
