KNOWLEDGE ON AETIOLOGY OF NOSOCOMIAL INFECTIONS AMONG HEALTH STAFF AT ABOH MBAISE GENERAL HOSPITAL IMO STATE NIGERIA

Abstract The knowledge on aetiology of nosocomial infection among the health staff at Aboh Mbaise General Hospital in Imo State Nigeria was carried out in November 2012. The objective of the study was to determine the knowledge on aetiology of nosocomial infection among the Hospital workers in Aboh Mbaise General Hospitals. It was aimed to determine the knowledge on aetiology of nosocomial infection in relation to their age and sex. It was also aimed to determine the percentage of knowledge on the aetiology in each of the Departments in Aboh Mbaise General Hospital. This was done by the use of questionnaire which was administered to each of the staff in all the departments. In the findings, some of the educated staff such as the Doctors, pharmacists and some of the nursing staff have enough knowledge on the aetiology of nosocomial infections representing 60% of the staff population and non educated staff such as the cleaners, the security staff, and the mortuary attendants does not have enough knowledge on aetiology of nosocomial infection. In conclusion, the level of knowledge among the educated staff was adequate and inadequate among the less-educated staff. Adequate recommendation was given to the staff to increase their knowledge on the aetiology of Hospital infections, and both in prevention and control through the break in the factors that play roles in the infections such as the source, host, and means of transmission.
