Abstract Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasingly recognized as a significant risk factor for cognitive decline and various forms of dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia. Despite substantial research, the exact mechanisms that underpin these associations remain elusive. This review delves into the intricate connections between T2DM and cognitive impairments, emphasizing the molecular and cellular features common to T2DM, type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), and insulin resistance. These conditions are linked to memory deficits and cognitive decline, which has led some researchers to suggest that Alzheimer's disease be described as "Type 3 diabetes." Keywords: .
