AN OBSERVATIONAL STUDY ON ASSESSMENT OF BMD IN SANDHIGATA VATA (OSTEOARTHRITIS) PATIENTS
Anisur Rahman* and Anup Baishya
. Abstract In Ayurvedic classics Sandhigata vata is one among 80 nanatmaja vatavyadhi which is very much common in the present society. With the advancement of age vata dosha also increases in an individual. This increasing vata triggers and accelerates dhatu kshaya and bala kshaya. The main seat of the Vata and kapha dosha is Asthi and Sandhi respectively. Sandhigata vata is the most common disease caused by dhatukshahya. Vata dosha plays a key role in this disease. Shoola is the main symptom of this disease associated with sandhishotha and vatapurnadrutiparsha. Sandhigata vata manifests when the deranged vata lodges in joints. It is the commonest disease form of articular disorder. In modern science Sandhigata Vata can be co-related with Osteoarthritis (OA). Osteoarthritis is a chronic, degenerative joint disease in which there is a progressive softening and disintegration of articular cartilage at the end of bones generally accompanied by the growth of osteophytes. Bone mineral density (BMD) is a measure of the amount of minerals in a defined area of bone. BMD tests are used to diagnose bone-related health issues like osteoporosis and osteopenia. A higher BMD indicates denser bones, which are generally stronger and less likely to fracture, while a lower BMD suggests weaker bones with a higher risk of fractures. In this study, 50 patients of sandhigata vata (OA) selected as per inclusion criteria to study the status of BMD and found that most of the patients are having osteopenia followed by osteoporosis. And there is increased risk of osteoporosis with low physical activity. Keywords: Sandhigata vata, Vata vyadhi, Asthi, Osteoarthritis, BMD. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
