REVIEW ON BILAYER TABLETS FOR BIMODAL DRUG RELEASE
Princy Stalin* and Roma Mathew
. Abstract Bimodal drug delivery is meant to deliver drugs at different time period or at different release rates from a single dosage form. They can deliver two incompatible medications in a single formulation, prolong the effect of drugs and increase patient compliance. Bilayer tablets are a type of tablets designed for bimodal release. In a bilayer tablet, one of the layers is released immediately, thus provides a sudden onset of action and the other layer is released in a sustained manner, thus provides a prolonged effect. Careful selection of excipients and manufacturing conditions are necessary for the development of bilayer tablets. Immediate release can be achieved by using super-disintegrants such as Croscarmellose, Sodium Starch Glycolate etc. and sustained release can be achieved by using release retardants such as HPMC K100, Eudragit, Poly lactic acid, Poly glycolic acid etc. Keywords: Bimodal release, Bilayer tablet, Immediate release, Sustained release.
